Welcome to Gauthier

Nestled in the picturesque hamlet of Gauthier in France's Tarn-et-Garonne region is our wonderful family home.

We fell in love with Gauthier in 2021 when we escaped London during the pandemic and have spent large parts of the last 4 years there. The house is a relaxed home perfect for large family groups with children, and we have spent many wonderful holidays with lots of friends and family coming and going.

The main house centres around an elegant 'Maison de maître' (sleeps up to 17 in 6 bedrooms), with two additional dwellings available to rent alongside it for larger groups needing extra space. The ‘Apartment’ sleeps 3 people in 2 bedrooms and the ‘Cottage’ sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms.

Our main house is the centre of the property with a large family kitchen leading out onto a long terrace covered in grape vines - perfect for shady lunches. In total the main house has 6 bedrooms (3 ensuite plus 2 additional separate bathrooms) and has been thoughtfully arranged with families in mind. In addition to 4 double bedrooms there are two expansive family rooms, one with a double bed and two singles, the other with a triple bunk bed and a queen-sized bed. There are also cots and sofa beds available if required.

Downstairs, aside from the spacious kitchen, there is a large sitting room with TV, a kids games room with table football table and a study set up for WFH. The cellars provide plentiful food and drink storage.

For extended families or larger groups, you have the option to expand your accommodation by adding our charming three-bedroom Cottage, and a cozy self-contained Apartment featuring a double bedroom, single bedroom, and kitchenette. This flexible arrangement allows you to tailor the space to your group's needs while maintaining the perfect balance of togetherness and privacy.

The property sits proudly atop a plateau above the Seoune valley, facing westwards towards commanding views over a tapestry of gentle hills and traditional farmland, where sunflowers and wheat fields stretch toward the horizon. While our immediate setting is one of serene, rolling countryside, short walks south or north fall into the region's dramatic landscape of striking hills and valleys, creating ever-changing views with each country drive or afternoon walk.

We have recently renovated much of the house whilst keeping traditional features and ensuring a relaxed feel to the property.

Amenities

The property sits in the middle of a large garden, with newly installed swimming pool to the west of the main house. Umbrellas and sun loungers provide the perfect place to relax during the heat of the day, or enjoy cocktails in front of the setting sun.

On the lower terrace we have a large Argentinian style BBQ, with a plentiful supply of wood, a pizza oven, and outdoor tables to enjoy late evening dinners in the garden. Below the terrace, the orchard runs down towards the fields and the various walks beyond.

Towards the front of the house is a small football pitch with 2 football goals, and back in the main garden a tree house weaves around a magnificent old oak tree for the the more adventurous kids.

Surrounding Areas

Though our hamlet is a tranquil enclave , we enjoy the best of both worlds – peaceful countryside surroundings with easy access to modern conveniences. Just a three-minute drive away, you'll find Bourg de Visa, a charming local village where you can start your day with fresh croissants from the boulangerie, enjoy a leisurely lunch at the brasserie, and pick up supplies from the supermarket. During August each local village hosts a marche gourmande; Bourg de Visa’s is each Tuesday evening, with lots of food, drink, and dodgy music!

One of the true gems of our location is our proximity (20 minutes drive) to Lauzerte, one of France's most beautiful hilltop towns. This medieval bastide, perched dramatically above the countryside, is a designated 'Plus Beaux Villages de France' (One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France). Its winding cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and stunning panoramic views make it a perfect day trip for families looking to explore the region's rich heritage.

There are a number of excellent restaurants nearby; we can provide recommendations and help with bookings. There are also many vineyards, swimming lakes, shops, river activities etc etc. We can give you our thoughts on all!

About us

We are an energetic family of 6 who enjoy travelling and spending time with friends and family. Gauthier is our escape from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives in the UK and we love every minute we spend there. This is a photo of the 6 of us on our terrace after we spent 10 months living at Gauthier and to complete the renovation.
